Hello there much neglected blog, I have some relevant information to impart.

BRAZIL EP, after much time maturing in a metaphorical oak-barrel, is finally seeping into existence. The digital number-swirl-MP3s have been packeting around the internet for a few weeks already, and by now the fully-real physical manifestations should be sitting in the racks and shelves of your local specialist music store. I urge you to buy the vinyl. URGE. URGE. OK?

here is some relevant information about this release;

- new 'slow' version of Brazil, a club-tempo mix of the track for DJs who want people to dance in circles
- old 'album' version of Brazil, a strange song of unknown powers, designed by a blue magician high with the energy of future duct-flow particles, playable by DJs who want people to stand still and then dance in triangles
- GOLD PANDA remix, a talented man who is very nice and who is welcome in my house for a cup of tea any day
- ETIENNE JAUMET remix, a shaman of modern synth music who oozes awesomeness from his hands
- Grumble, a new track I did, it features a bass-line, it has a bit where it slows down, deep within it is the sound of child saying the word 'balloon'

NEWS FLASH! MORE RELEVANT INFORMATION TO FOLLOW

There is a video for Brazil, that's right, a VIDEO. The VIDEO was made by me and two other people. One of the other people is Katherine Mager, she did all of the camera work and she also did thinking about the video before it was made, she is a photographer usually and this is her first video, she has a fine eye for interesting things to look at. And the other one of the people is Sam Riviere, he did all of the writing for the text that is in the video, he is a poet and a very nice man, he would probably do a better blog post than this if he was in charge of the LUKEABBOTTMUSIC blog, but he's not and I am, so you're stuck with me prattling on with these stupidly long sentences not knowing when to finish saying something, using too many commas, deconstructing grammar into a conversational tone and writing URGE in unexpected places as some kind of callback to an earlier part of the blog post. I also did some stuff for the video, editing and thinking and stuff.

The financial doom and gloom that currently surrounds all things has been seeping into the academic world long enough that it is beginning to bear it's rotten fruit. Sadly, I think that in the UK we're only at the beginning of a downward spiral that will see the end of many of our universities.

Yesterday, the University of East Anglia announced the closure of it's School of Music, a place that I care about deeply. I studied at the UEA school of music for three years as a masters degree student, it has one of the most open-minded experimental postgraduate music programs currently operating in the UK. This is the place that helped shape my understanding of music, and this is the school that I had hoped to one day return to as a PhD student.

Please sing this petition to try and save the UEA School of Music.

I just got back from Canada, Mutek was awesome fun, thanks to everyone who came to the picnic, I had a great time!

Next gig is tomorrow (Friday 10th) at Club To Club in Istanbul, I'm not sure what to expect, last time I did Club To Club it was in Turin and I played under the skeletal head of a T-Rex. James will also be playing, which is good cos I missed most of his set in Canada due to an unforeseen clash of poutine and jetlagg...

Then, there's AWAKENINGS festival, 25th June. That looks like it's going to be good.

Also very soon is Rex Club in Paris... there's a Facebook group HERE, join it and be merry.

...talking of live sets

So, as cosmic synergy would have it, my laptop-set-of-times-gone-by has reared it's head for a final time, probably due to meta-ripples or some kind of one-step-removed morphic resonance from the awakening of my new hardware setup. I don't know. But either way you can listen to my (now superseded) set from Bloc 2011, which coincidentally was great fun. As ever with this type of live set recording, the lack of crowd noise is somewhat disconcerting, but trust me, at the time the room was full of free-flowing people dancing like drug-eyed plastic flower children. You know how it is.

For a while now I've been gigging with a laptop set. I've had no end of problems with MIDI controllers; I tried the evolution controllers and they just go wrong for no apparent reason, I had one of those Behringer ones with the motor-faders and the rotary controllers on it were awful and the motor-faders didn't work too well either, I had one of those AKAI APC40's which also suffers from shit rotary controllers as well as bad design and poor build quality. Eventually I got so frustrated with the poor design and cheap construction of most commercially available controllers that I built my own MIDI controller based around a Doepfer USB64...

...this actually works pretty well, the pots are really nice and much more responsive than stupid-awful-slow-backwards endless encodor things. Also, it's really strong cos I got the faceplate machined out of aluminum, so it's much more road-worthy than most other things I've owned.

But in a typically dissatisfied manner, I was still a bit frustrated with my software-based live show. It's just seems a bit unnatural for me to go from a studio full of hardware to a live show that's all software. So I've decided to reinvent my live set as a more hardware orientated affair. Anyone who managed to make it to my album launch party at Ginglik would have seen me playing with a small modular case, this was my first attempt at bridging the studio/live divide with a hardware solution. But it turns out that modular synths should really stay at home, as gigging with them is asking for trouble, not to mention backache. And with that in mind, in a financially and logistically inadvisable fashion, I've spent the last month or so buying new gear for my new live set up...

...heavier, less functional, more prone to damage, more expensive, harder to travel with. Yep, this is less practical than a laptop set in almost every way. But, it sounds better and it's more fun. And I still have to carry a laptop around anyway as all this stuff needs to get it's MIDI from somewhere, and I'm not gonna start gigging with my MMT8 cos the buttons are breaking. Oh well.

Anyway, for the synth-nerds reading this, here's a run down of the kit I'm using;

Soundcraft Notepad mixer - only 50 quid and sounds great, makes nice distortion on the 2 mic channels if you turn the gain up, especially good for adding a bit of weight to kick drums.

DSI Tetra - despite the absolutely terrible editing software, this is still the smallest good sounding polysynth you can buy, so I didn't really have much choice.

MFB 522 - I love the MFB stuff, it's brilliant. This drum machine is small, light, cheap (for what it is) and it sounds brilliant. I love the kick drum especially.

MFB Nanozwerg - just sounds great, this synth is really well thought out, amazing price for what it is.

TC Electronic Nova Repeater - I've had a few different delay pedals recently, I never realised how fussy I am about delays... this one is by far the best designed and best sounding one I've found, the way it's laid out make it really playable, it's more like another instrument than an effect.

Behringer CS100 - this is a really crap compressor pedal, I bought it at a car-boot-sale for 4 quid, it makes loads of hum and buzz and it distorts things in a very cheap and nasty way, so obviously it's fantastic for doing weird things to drum parts. Splashy popping fuzzy hats and clonky snare hits. 4 quid well spent, I wish I could have found everything at boot-sales.

All that in an extra large pedal board to make setting up and gigging a little bit less stressful. Plus, the laptop sending MIDI out everywhere, and a couple of audio channels incase I need to fill-out the sound, and a LauchPad and a FaderFox (the two MIDI controllers that I still like) to control all that.

Last time I was in Brighton I ate fish and chips.

LOOK, IF YOU'RE SERIOUS ABOUT THIS FISH AND CHIPS THING, THEN WHY NOT COME DOWN TO THE GREEN DOOR STORE ON THURSDAY 12TH MAY, WHERE I WILL BE PLAYING MUSIC WHILE WRESTLING WITH FISH AND CHIP RELATED INDIGESTION, I MIGHT EVEN SAVE YOU A CHIP. I PROBABLY WILL SMELL SLIGHTLY OF VINEGAR AND THE FAT THAT THEY FRY THE FISH AND CHIPS IN. GREASE. WHATEVER. SO SORRY ABOUT THAT IN ADVANCE.

...er, I wrote tickets first cos I don't think there's many left so you'd better hurry if you're going to get some. But I haven't even told you what they're tickets for yet, so if you've just bought some then you are a very trusting person and should be congratulated. Here's what you've just bought a ticket for; it's a gig in London, the gig is featuring none-other than King Creosote and Jon Hopkins, who's new collaborative record 'Diamond Mine' has been keeping my ears happy for the last few weeks - it really is very good and you should check it out. As well as them though little 'ol me is going to be playing support, so if I'm your cup of tea then maybe you ought think about being there. It's not going to be my usual club-tinged set of kick-drums galore though, it's going to be a subtler affair with some stripped-back ambient reworking of a few of the tracks from Holkham Drones as well as a couple of new things I've been working on. Jon has mentioned to me that it's going to be candle lit too, so if I start getting romantic (i.e. hitting on you with bad chat up lines) while I play then you know why... I might even buy a smoking jacket for the show. [FYI, that's sarcasm, you know I already have a wardrobe full of smoking jackets ready for every occasion!] ...25th May by the way, but it'll say that on the ticket you just bought.

AND ANOTHER THING, what's going on with my totally lame lack of updating you with my up coming gigs? Well, let me tell you, I'm going to do that updating very soon, maybe even later today. I've just been away so much doing gigs that I haven't had time to tell you about it. And also I'm trying to avoid having to use that freakin' awful myspace interface, myspace is shit. But keep your ear to the ground, cos I've got some pretty exciting gigs coming up, including a little excursion to Canada with Mr Holden which I am particularly excited about, so if you're Canadian then maybe soon we will meet. But there's no gigs very soon, I've got the rest of this month to sit in my studio and work on new things, fun!

YES. THAT IS CORRECT. So, Christmas and new years eve and all that stuff where you get fat and drunk is going to happen first, but as soon as that's out the window and all you've got left is the cold reality of 2011, something magical will appear... namely, the release of my TRANS FOREST ALIGNMENT single, the title track of which you will already know if you have been listening to Holkham Drones, but what you won't know yet are the two MAGICAL remixes and the one BRAND NEW TRACK that you haven't ever heard of, unless you've read about it already somewhere else on the internet, like on twitter, or some other kind of paragraph-free communication tool that shortens your attention span... Anyway, the single will be a download blah blah, and also a fantastic 12" vinyl record that you can touch and hold and look at without the need to stare at a screen of any kind other than the screen of reality that is in your mind.

DETAILS OF THE TRANS FOREST ALIGNMENT REMIXES.

GAVIN RUSSOM (synth-wizard of DFA fame and generally-magical multifaceted and artistically minded man with great hair) has provided us with a remix that is ten new flavours of awesome. There is a really good video-interview with Gavin on the internet (which you can probably find without me giving you a link), it's worth watching so you can see how much of a real life wizard he is. I wish I was as much of a wizard as he is, but at best I am a man that stands in the background trying to understand the wizard and who makes tea and sits down a lot.

ROCKETNUMBERNINE (who are an amazing live act and who have recently released a hugely-brilliant record on Kieran Hebden's uber cool TEXT label) have made a progtastic wonder-meal of a remix that moves like a horse in the dead of winter running towards a mythological spire of light on hooves of fear and gold. That's right, I'm highlighting written language's inability to accurately convey anything of substance about the subjective qualities of music by providing you with increasingly ludicrous mental imagery. Suck it up. The fact is that if you want to discover anything of worth about music of any kind, you're going to have to stop reading other people's opinions that are posted all over the internet with a grossly unnecessary sense of self-importance, and imagine some thoughts of your own with nothing but your ears and your mind-powers. Like ROCKET#9 and GAVIN do every day. Probably.

AND ONE LAST THING. As well as those two remixes there's a new track of my own on the record. It is called A CAUCUS RACE, which is an intentionally provocative Lewis Carroll reference, go and work it out. It's a track that I decided not to put on Holkham Drones due to it's unsustainable frivolity and it's general lack of clandestine arrogance. Although it does have one of the best snare drum sounds of any track I've ever made, and a bass line, yeah, an actual bass line like normal dance music often has.

You can buy it on the 24th January 2011 and temporarily escape from the mundane depression of the first three months of the new year. That's the end of my opinion-based blog post about my new single, which was written with a grossly unnecessary sense of self-importance. I apologise for going on too long and not bullet-pointing the important bits, but I'm jet-lagged to within an inch of my mind right now.

Excellent news for anyone who, like me, is getting increasingly obsessed with analogue modular gear... the wonderful German synth shop Schneiders Buero are opening a show room in Rough Trade East... that's quite brilliant news I think. To add to the excitement, Navs Modular Lab (wonderful blog for modular geekery) is going to be doing a performance/workshop alongside some live vinyl cutting this Sunday to celebrate the opening. Sadly I won't be able to make it, but if you're in east London this weekend you'd be a fool to miss out.

I've done a mix and a little interview for Slutty Fringe. I think it's my favorite mix I've done yet, although I've only one 3 ever (the other ones are here and here), so I'm still not going about to call my self a DJ. Anyway, doing the mix I took the excuse to dig out some of my only sound-fx and library record, so expect the occasional engine noise and clock strike. Next time I'm going to try and use that scream that's in all films somewhere.

OUT TODAY!

Out today on AMAZING SOUNDS is my new ep. You can buy it as a download, or you can find it on (very limited - 500 only) 12" Vinyl in a record shop.

Here's a brief description of the tracks;

Honeycomb - James has played it out quite a bit, it's got some nice noise on it and a nice synth arpeggio part too. I was working on this track at the same time as I was doing 'Little Wonderment' from my last BC record, so the tracks (in my mind at least) are from the same brain place. Also, there's a clap sound in it, which I don't do very often, so enjoy it for the three or four bars it's around for.

113 - The synths from this are from a quasi-generative synth/sequencer patch I made in Reaktor, and the drums were the last thing I recorded with my xBase09 before I sold it to Nathan.

Present - Made with my SidStation and 4 drum samples very quickly, kind of a empty gesture musically speaking, but play this in a club and people melt. You only live once, sometimes you've just got to turn the volume up and dance.

Schmitt Swell - A collection of homemade schmitt trigger oscillators droning away. If you ever want to build your own oscillators then schmitt trigger's are a good place to starts because they're easy and cheap, and they can sound pretty amazing.

Very soon I will have a new record out, an EP on Allez Allez's new label called AMAZING SOUNDS. I had a remix on their last release for Dan Deacon too, but this next one's going to be a 4 track EP of new stuff by me. It's called 'Honeycomb EP', because the first track on it is called 'Honeycomb'. There's also a track that I've played quite a lot live that I get asked about quite often, it's a fast track called 'Present', people usually say something like "what's that fast track you played at the end?", well, it's that one... that's on there. There's another track on it too called 'Honeycomb' that James has played out a few times too. Also out soon is James's new DJ Kicks record, which is ace, it's got a remix I did a while ago for a German band called Mit on it, and it's also got one of my tracks on it called 'Soft Attacks', which is taken from an album I've just finished called 'Holkham Drones'. That album is going to come out on Border Community at the end of August. We've also got a couple of singles planned to come of that album with some remixes that I'm really excited about, but I'm not going to say any more about that because it's all still in progress... anyway, lots of records. Very soon.

I can't believe it's been almost a year since Nathan released (mother's gone to)HARD I(ce)SLANDS... but that's the truth, time flies, unlike airplanes in the UK at the moment, which are grounded because of the giant ash cloud... which brings me to my next point, SOUND CLOUD is a giant web site full of music, and if you like music, which I do, then you'll probably want to know that Nathan has just started his own page on THE GIANT SOUND ASH CLOUD.

I probably should have blogged this sooner, in fact i may have done so already and forgotten, but either way... I did a mix for Vessel Music, you can find it here. It's got some lovely tracks in it I think, but I would say that coz I chose them. The high point is the R Stevie Moore track 'Skin Mags', which is quite possibly my favorite recording ever. BC PARTY AT CORSICA STUDIOS, Tombola comin' at-ya

The last Corsica Studios party that BC did was awesome, and I'm sure that this next one is going to be just as good, not least because the line up looks really special. As well as BC originals Holden, Avus and Petter, I'm totally excited to find out what the Fuck Buttons DJ set is gonna be like. Plus Kate Wax (also a former Outputer) will be DJing too, and if that wasn't enough goodness Ed Chamberlain is playing live, which is all very exciting. Also playing live is a band called 'Falling From Cloud 9', who I've not heard yet, but I'm very much looking forward to the unknown sounds that await me...

One of the many magical things from the last Corsica party was the village fete inspired Community Cast-Off Tombola, where wonderful pieces of post-fluxus treasure were given up as prizes by the BC crew and friends. I, being the forgetful fool that I am, managed to forget my treasure last time... so I'm really excited that it's happening again, as I intend to right this wrong by framing and giving away my felt-tip pen scribble-explosion that's been used for the flyers (see pic above). So make sure you get there early for your chance to win some overly colourful decor and whatever other items find their way into the tombola!

Ceephax has also got a new record out called 'Drive Time'. I bought it yesterday and I think it's really good. As well as the usual balls-out basic acid hoedown that he's known for, it's also got lots of ambient bits on it and some half finished tracks that stop half way and brief noises scattered about the record. Apparently this is a vinyl release of a tape cassette he did in 2000... but whatever, it's a good record.

I have rid my self of all urges to live in a forest with a MachineDrum... and have instead decided to challenge James' modular system with a system of my own. It has been said that the wonderful thing about modular systems is that individual modules are undetectable by girlfriends, so I'm looking forward to navigating my way down a slippery path that will eventually end in growing a beard and a belly, and wearing flip-flops and a cardigan. And maybe even making some music.

Before I open the flood gates on that one though I've got to finish building my x0xb0x... Word of advise, if you ever buy one of these kits make sure you get them to put the USB chip on for you... surface mounted chips are horrible to solder. But I'm almost done, I should finish it tonight providing I don't have to do any washing up or cooking or anything. I can't wait to hook it up to my tr606 and get early acid-house all over the living room.

This Saturday will be the last Border Community party at the legendary venue, so unless you've got a ridiculously good excuse then you have to come. Ellen Allien is playing, awesome, Nathan is playing, awesome awesome, as ever Scott and James are on main room DJ duties, double wicked and totally WOOOH, and Kieran Hebden will be camping out all night in the lounge, yeah baby, yeah.

Plastique Fantastique are my new favorite artists. They are awesome in a way that makes everything else seem back to front. They make comics and shrines and they have pagan-esq ceremonies that involve street processions and masks. More people should do that type of thing.

Virginia Woolf, she drank a lot, and she killed her self, but first she wrote some books, like this book for example. I haven't read it yet, but i plan to because I've been thinking a lot recently about the whole play-within-a-play thing... and films with good dream sequences too...

I've been seriously considering the purchase of an Elektron Machinedrum. Since I sold my Jomox XBase09 to Nathan, I have tried to satisfy my drum machine hunger with an MFB Kult, which, despite its size and limited controls, is really great... but it's not got that magic wonder that the Machinedrum seems to offer. So, as is often the way with moments of gear-lust, I hit on youtube to see if I could talk my self out of it. It almost worked because the majority of youtube videos feature the dullest of the dull minimal-beat workouts that make me want quit doing dance music and live in the forrest in a shed with only a Putney for company. But then I found this video...

...and now I want to live in a shed in the forrest with a Machinedrum.

I really like it because it's got a really loose feel about it, I think that James is going to spearhead a new movement of post-techno psychedelic something in the near future and we're all going to be dancing to the sound of hamster feet walking on contact mics, and I'm going to try and join in, but first i've got to grow my hair, it almost makes me want to burn incense sticks and hang out with people called 'badger' and eat seeds, but I'm not quite there yet... anyway, apart from the awesome vocal treatment, my favorite thing about the track is that when i listen to it on my old c.r.t eMac at work, the screen has wobbly black lines that run across everything when the bass drum kicks... how wonderful is that??!!

The Incredible Mechanical Music Museum

Hidden away in a large shed in Cotton in the depths of Suffolk is the Mechanical Music Museum. In a rather obtuse move to keep people away, they only open it on Sunday afternoons for 4 months of the year, but if you're feeling adventurous on a Sunday some time before the end of August then it's definitely worth a trip.

They've got all kinds of amazing things including a Cinema Wurlitzer which is an organ that's connected to a whole room of things that make noise that can disappear into the floor at the touch of a button... awesome. They've got loads of music boxes and pianos that play them selves that they demonstrate for you on their tour, and lots of those huge things that you used to see at the fair ground in Victorian times that are really really loud...
They also have a lot of strange and wonderful things cluttering up the place, the best of which is a monkey with a tail erection.

Shameless plug for the newest BC record, Ricardo Tobar is back with a new ep! WOOOH!

All four tracks are great, but I like 'Psprf Frame' the best, it's really fuzzy and has that just-keeping-it-together feeling that reminds me of trying to maintain a sense of reality when you find yourself approaching Sunday morning from the wrong direction... mmmm... you can buy the ep as mp3's from the Border Community web site, or if you're feeling adventurous then you can go to a real record shop and buy it on vinyl and appreciate the super brilliant artwork by Boris Zelenkevich.

Anyway, thanks to everyone who came to Nottingham on Thursday and Ginglik on Saturday... Nottingham was good fun, but turned into a very late and very drunken night for me and Dan... which in turn caused me to wake up with a temperature and the shakes whilst trying to sleep it off (again) on Friday night, which left me in a less than capable state for the gig on Saturday, but i gritted my teeth and went for it anyway, and good job i did because the gig was great fun despite me being frighteningly close to fainting for the first half hour... and the the Sonic Cathedral gig that James and Ricardo did on Sunday was also awesome, you should absolutely make an effort to catch Ricardo's live set while he's over here doing a tour with James!

The Creative Cloud Collective are a bunch of creative types who are making a film called Under/Over The Clouds... it looks like it's going to be a bit of visual treat in the Terry Gilliam dream sequence vein. They are having a preview of the first half of their film at Ginglik in Shepherd's Bush and they've kindly invited me to play.

The night looks like it's going to be a bit of an audio/visual treat with a diverse selection of music and video artists due to perform. I'm going to be doing my set accompanied by Mr Teledisco doing pictures.. and he's promised me that he'll be premiering his latest investment for the performance.

Anyway, after the gig at The End last weekend I can't wait to have another go on a big PA system, so 21st June at Ginglik.

New Owl Box Tracks

I'm a big fan of my friend John's (aka The Owl Box) music, I did a post about his last track and now here's a post about his new one...

His newest track is called CR78, named after the drum machine from which the samples came. It's a fine example of making music the back-to-front way. The humble iPod shuffle is an unlikely thing to use as a sequencer, but John's willingness to forfeit his compositional rights has led him into filling his iPods full of drum samples and letting them shuffle away... the result is an epic example of how to annoy people who think that labeling something as 'IDM' is a good way of pigeonholing music.

I've been thinking about buying a harmonium since last summer when i helped an artist guy called Ron Tran record one in a field along with a banjitar and a violin... the harmonium in question was a suitcase one that sounded really warm and dusty, a very good way for anything to sound. Anyway, i've been listening to the band Harmonium recently (on James's recommendation) and it's reminded me.

the flyer says that i solder together 8bit electro against a backdrop of industrial beats, which i don't think i do, so for the sake of accurate billing i will be working in 24bit, i will not have a soldering iron with me and I promise not to get as industrial as bjork did when i went to see her show in london at the weekend. (it was great btw, best bit was mark bell dropping into 'freak' at the end of 'hyperballad' and the lasers in 'army of me' were pretty cool too, it was all a bit war of the worlds.)

i got slapped by the owl box

at the weekend we had a party because it was Kat's birthday.. my friend John got really drunk, he is wonderful when he is drunk... he's lovely when he's sober too, but when he's drunk he becomes strangely competitive, violent and very apologetic. He challenged me to a ferocious game of thumb-war which somehow ended in him slapping me in the face (i think it was a distraction tactic)... and later on that night he also wrestled Dan to the floor, probably because Dan played a Bon Jovi record, but i'm not sure.

anyway, that's all irrelevant, what i really wanted to say was that you should listen to John's new track because it's excellent, he calls him self The Owl Box and his latest music track is called 'OwlBoxFive demo' and it's on his myspace page...

also, if you get a chance, you should have a look at his D.I.Y label Ilya & Emilia Projects that he runs with his lovely lady friend Holly, who is sometimes known as Baby Grand. If you're feeling really adventurous then you might even want to buy their latest release 'For Example', which is a collection of Norwich based music makers, my self included.
